Train for the demands of a real match

Competition tennis asks players to solve problems under pressure. Alongside stroke development, our coaches teach court positioning, shot selection, patterns of play and how to adjust when an opponent changes tactics. Players learn to construct points rather than simply hit another ball over the net.

Sessions include live-ball exercises, serve and return practice, singles and doubles scenarios, tie-breaks and match play. This gives players repeated opportunities to make decisions, manage score pressure and develop routines between points. Coaches provide specific feedback that players can take into their next fixture or tournament.

Build confidence, resilience and match awareness

Results matter in competition, but long-term development matters more. We help players review matches constructively, respond to momentum changes and stay committed to a clear game plan. That process develops resilience and self-awareness on court while keeping training challenging and enjoyable.

Players are grouped by stage and ability so the pace remains productive. DNTA’s coaching locations across Melbourne’s western suburbs offer a pathway from early match play through stronger inter-club, regional and state-level competition. Advanced players demonstrating the required commitment and standard may progress into High Performance training.

Is Competition training the right next step?

This program is best for players who can rally, serve and score independently and now want more purposeful match experience. A coach may consider technical consistency, movement, concentration and willingness to compete when recommending a group. Players do not need a long tournament history; they need the foundations and attitude to benefit from faster drills, tactical instruction and regular pressure situations.
